Thai Pongal (Makara Sankaranthi)

  • Tuesday 15 January 2019

Farmers are the world’s oldest civilised community. Farmers celebrate Thai Pongal in a grand manner by giving thanks to God and the Sun by offering grains such as rice and crops such as sugar cane that they had cultivated and harvested. Pongal  (sweetened rice) is made with freshly harvested rice grains and offered to God. Pongal is celebrated with joy and festivities on the first day of Thai, which coincides with the beginning of Uttarayanam (six-month period when the Sun is seen to move towards the North).
