Karthikai Krishna Paksha Astami (8th day after the full moon) in the month of Karthikai, is observed as Mahakala Bhairavashtami. Special prayers are held for Sri Bhairavar on this day. Devotees pray to Sri Bhairavar in order to subjugate the evil, protect the good and eliminate dark forces.
