Prathosham

Prathosham is an important fasting day dedicated to Lord Shiva. Prathosham occurs twice in a month – on the 13th day (Trayodasi) during the “Shukla Paksham” ( waxing moon fortnight) and the other during “Krishna Paksham” ( waning moon fortnight). The abishegam and prayers are performed in the evening. There are numerous legends associated with the Prathosha Viratham. It is believed that Lord Shiva drank the Halahala poison that was churned up from the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan) during Prathosham. Repeatedly engaged in war by the demons, the divinities glorified Lord Shiva with hymns to bless them with a leader for their celestial hosts during the twilight of the Prathosham day. Hence Lord Shiva and his consort Parvathi are found in an extremely propitious mood and Lord Shiva grants whatever that a sincere devotee asks on the day of Prathosham. Since Monday is dedicated to Shiva, the Prathosham falling on Monday is referred as Soma- Pradosham and is considered highly auspicious. Prathosham falling on Saturday during the “Krishna Paksham” ( waning phase of moon) is also auspicious.
