முப்பொழுதும் இறை திருமேனி தீண்டும் 'ஆதி சைவ மரபில்' தோன்றி அடியார்களின் பெருமைகளை உலகிற்கு உணர்த்த அவதரித்தவர். கோயிலில் வழிபடும் பக்தர்களே, தொண்டர்களே முதன்மையானவர்கள் என திருதொண்டர் தொகை என்ற நூலைத் திருமுறையாக 'திருப்பாட்டு' பாடினார். நம்பிரான் தோழர், வன்தொண்டர், நம்பி ஆரூரன் முதலான பெயர்களை கொண்ட சுந்தரரின் முக்தி நாள் இதுவாகும். நெறி யோகநெறி. மார்க்கம் சகமார்க்கம்.

Born into an Adi Shaiva temple priest lineage, Sundaramoorthi Naayanaar made the world realise the greatness of devotees.  He sang the Thiruthondar Thogai which is celebrated as   Thiruppaattu – a collection of Thirumurai hymns that extol the foremost importance of temple devotees and volunteers. Nambiran Thozhar, Vanthondar, Nambi Aarooran are just some of his other names. Sundaramoorthi Naayanaar achieved Mukti (union with God) on this day in Thiruvanjaikkalam. He practiced Yoga Neri and Saga Margam. Gurupoojai falls on the day of Swathi Nakskhatram in the month of Aadi.
